I learned a new term as I’ve been researching how to be part of the solution for racial diversity and inclusion and dismantling the systems of oppression. Silentpreneur. Here’s the definition:

An entrepreneur who refuses to address important issues in society and refuses to discuss topics that are considered controversial or sensitive in order to protect his/her glossy image, perfect branding (on social media) failing to stand up for good causes and yet he/she financially benefits from those who are highly affected by these issues. ~ Queen Chioma

Using our voice is always important and the voices of Black People and People of Colour are rising up even louder because they have been ignored and violently silenced for so long. It’s hard to know what to say or do to not offend or defend or center inappropriately. I haven’t added my voice of outrage to the pot of outrage and shame right now because there are no words that are strong enough, helpful or adequate enough to speak about the violence against Black People and other People of Colour.

There is a difference between being silent to preserve an image and being silent while you process your own emotions and perspectives and collect your thoughts so that you can be a voice that elevates these other voices. I confess I’m new to this awareness of white privilege and I’ve spent the last week educating myself as fast as I can. What I’ve discovered is there are no easy answers and it’s a lifelong commitment to social change that is required of me. It’s required of all of us who care about making a big impact in the world.

I’m also making peace with the fact that it’s not about getting it right. It’s about taking imperfect action that’s centered in love and taking that action daily. It’s having the hard conversations. It’s calling out prejudice and oppression every single time I witness it. It’s being willing to constantly learn and listen to the leaders who are bringing through solutions. It’s also making sure my own frequency is as high as possible so that I can be here for the long haul.
