My biggest lesson from our recent family adventure is that it’s ok to want and dream for myself even as I have shared dreams and desires with others.

I have been craving adventure. I bought a little car to have adventures in. And yet I was afraid that my family would feel abandoned if I just took off for a couple days. My friend pointed out to me lovingly that by denying myself this I am actually abandoning myself and it hit me why I felt this way in the first place…my father abandoned our family when I was 16 and my daughter is currently 16.

Even though it’s been decades and I’ve healed, that tiny piece was was still active so and came up for love now.

The 3 of us hiked, enjoyed the sights, the smell of the forest, the colours of the water, the raw power of the Rockies and I relished every second.

And when we got home my daughter said: “That was fun! Now I need a Me Day.”
Me: “A Me Day! Why?”
Her: “Because I like to do my own thing, too.”

And I knew in that moment that she feels safe and loved and it’s because of how I chose to parent and how I chose to face old patterns head on and heal, no matter how long it took. And she will never abandon herself because that cycle stopped with my father.

I refused to carry it on for my family. And now I’m ready for my own Me Day because I can do my own thing, too.
I’m not sure where my first solo adventure will be, but you can bet it’s coming soon!
